In the introduction written by Dr. Batmanghelidj to "Water, The Ultimate Cure" by Steve Meyerowitz, Dr. Batmanghelidj states, " ...water is the primary energizer of all functions in the body. It manufactures hydroelectric energy at the cell membranes allover the body, particularly in the neurotransmitter systems. Through its hydroelectric properties, it also and initially breaks down all elements to their primary constituents for absorption into the system for further use...for example proteins to amino acids, starch to sugar, and fats to fatty acids...Water is also the adhesive that bonds cell membranes. Water, therefore plays an all encompassing role in energy metabolism and the physiologic functions of the body." He urges people with health problems to try water as a natural medication since they may not be sick, only dehydrated.

Sodas, fruit juices, coffee, teas with caffeine are not acceptable substitutes for water. It has to be pure H20 to..do the job. Herbal teas without caffeine are acceptable replacements for water.

What is pure water? Pure water is H2O--two parts hydrogen and one part oxygen. That is it--nothing more or nothing less. Not H20 plus anything else! We must drink water that is absolutely free of foreign particles, chemicals, minerals that our bodies cannot absorb.

We see water today that has been "purified" to some extent, but the real question is-to what extent? Today it is virtually impossible to find "pure" water anywhere on our planet. We think of rain water as pure, but as the rain falls it becomes contaminated with contaminates such as chemicals, smog, and other debris in the atmosphere created by civilization.

Rain and melting snows carry pesticides, herbicides and fertilizers into our streams, rivers, lakes and wells. Even if municipal water was pure as it left the treatment facility, it may have to travel through miles of pipes to reach your home...And these pipes are guaranteed to be filthy.

Once inside your home, your water is subjected to further contaminants-lead and other heavy metals can be dissolving in your water supply from piping, solder joints and brass fixtures. Lead when ingested can cause severe neurological damage, especially in children. The EPA estimates that 38 million Americans drink water that exceeds the 50 parts per billion, the "safe" level for lead. And who knows if the 50 ppb isn't too much? Lead based paints were banned a few years ago because they were connected to children with low learning abilities, yet the lead in our water supplies has gone virtually unnoticed in this regard.

• Boiling Water? This age-old technique does kill bacteria, but since some of the water boils off in the process, simply boiling concentrates the nitrates, salts, heavy metals and other contaminates that are left in the water.

• Bottled Water? It is estimated that 20 million U.S. households have turned to bottled water. Is this a wise choice? There is little evidence to suggest that bottled water is any healthier than most municipal tap water.

  Most bottled water sells for 89 cents or more per gallon, much water is nothing but tap water, with little or no processing, which is sold at prices up to 1600 times the initial cost of the water. In fact, 25 percent of bottled waters sold come from municipal supplies with only chlorine and bad taste removed. Legally accepted sources of bottled water are wells, springs and public tap water!

  Bottled water usually has the taste of the plastic container that it is bottled in. Water in low grade plastic may leach toxins from the container, such as methyl chloride, a carcinogen.

  Freshness is also an issue. A recent study conducted by Northeastern University reveals that bacteria can indeed breed in bottled water which can cause intestinal problems, diarrhea and nausea. In conclusion, bottled water offers you no peace of mind nor does it guarantee consistent purity.

• Water Softeners? Water softeners treat hard water simply by exchanging sodium for hardness such as calcium or magnesium. Removing the hardness minerals helps soap and laundry detergent dissolve more easily, softeners have little, if any, effect on bacteria and do not remove synthetic chemicals or heavy metals like lead. Water softeners do little to improve the water for drinking, and the extra sodium added to the water could present problems for people on low salt diets.

• Filters? Filtered water passes through a fine strainer and/or activated carbon. While carbon filters reduce disagreeable tastes and odors like chlorine, they are not effective in removing contaminants like arsenic, copper, lead, nitrates, parasites, sodium, sulfates, and the list goes on.

  The filter itself becomes a breeding ground for bacteria as the organic material which remains in the filter begins to decay.

  Another drawback is knowing when to replace the filter. Manufacturers suggest replacing the filter when the water begins to have a bad taste or odor. This bad taste or odor may not happen until long after the filter has lost its ability to filter our tasteless, odorless organics such astrihalomethanes.

• Reverse Osmosis? Reverse osmosis (RO) systems force water under high pressure through a synthetic semi-permeable membrane to reduce inorganic minerals. However, these systems vary widely in their ability to reject nitrates, chlorides and some other contaminants.

  RO performance is affected by water pressure, water temperature, pH, bacteria, dissolved solids and the chemical contaminant level of raw tap water.

  An RO system works by flushing contaminants out with additional quantities of water. This process can send as much as six gallons of wasted water down the drain to produce only one gallon of treated water. This means producing 3 gallons of RO water per day would waste approximately 6,000 gallons of water each year.

  Like other filtration systems, gradual clogging will result in declining effectiveness and can also lead to contamination from bacterial growth.

• Steam Distillation? Even in this age of high technology, there is no perfect purification process. However, when you consider the other alternatives...distillation comes the closest to producing perfect water. Distillation is widely recognized as the single most effective method of purification.

The distillation process mimics nature. The process is much like rain is formed by nature. Water is heated in a chamber and turned into vapor (steam). This vapor rises leaving impurities behind in the boiling chamber. The purified vapor then enters a condenser where it is cooled and returned to the liquid state.
